How to Backup your WordPress Site with UpdraftPlus

Creating regular backups for your WordPpress website is important. You never realize how important until your website get hacked or breaks. Installing badly designed themes or plugins can take your website down. Then, restoring your website from a backup is the only solution. So, backup your WordPress site before installing any plugins.

Downtime and data loss cost the worldwide economy almost $2 trillion each year. The reasons for this downtime and data loss vary between; your website being hacked, hosts losing or deleting your data and malicious scripts. WordPress is without any build in backup solution. However, there are excellent plugins that can automatically backup your WordPress site. UpdraftPlus is one of these plugins.

UpdraftPlus is one of the best plugins to backup your WordPress site with. With it, you can setup automatic backup schedules and easily restore your WordPress site. Furthermore, it is free and allows you to store your backups on the cloud or download it to your computer.

In addition to uploading your backup to Dropbox, Google Drive, S3, Rackspace and several other cloud storage services, you can email a backup or upload it to FTP or SFTP.

Now, let’s take a look at how to backup your WordPress site with UdraftPlus. But, first things, first; head over the the UpdraftPlus WordPress page and install it.

When installed and activated, go tot Settings and then UpdraftPlus Backups to configure the plugin settings.

Now, go to the Settings tab. Here you can setup an automatic backup and location to store them.

Firstly, choose a backup schedule for your files. This will be your WordPress themes, plugins and images. Then choose a backup schedule for your WordPress database.

Base your backup schedule on how often you add new content to your website. For example, If you add a post each week, then you can select a weekly backup of your files and database. If you update your site daily, a daily backup is recommended.

Next, you choose where to store your backup files. Do not save your backups where your website is stored, because you will lose access to your backups when you lose access to your website. Therefore, a remote location is the best solution.

To setup a remote location, simply click on the service and you will see setup instructions below it.

In this tutorial we are going to use Dropbox as remote backup storage.

Now, on the UpdraftPlus Settings page, click on Dropbox and then at the bottom of the page, click on the Save Changes button. A popup will show with a link to authorize access to your Dropbox account, click on this link to start the authorization process.

You will be redirected to the Dropbox website where you will be asked to sign-in using your Dropbox email and password. You will be asked if you want to allow UpdraftPlus to access your Dropbox account. It will only be able to access its own folder in Apps/UpdraftPlus; so, it is safe to click on Allow.

UpdraftPlus Authorize Dropbox 2You will be redirected to the UpdraftPlus website. There you must click on the Complete Setup button to finish Dropbox setup.

You will now be directed back to your WordPress site, and you should see the UpdraftPlus Settings page again, at the bottom of this, click on the Save Changes button. The backup schedule and remote backup location setup should be done now.

Backup your WordPress site manually

Apart from automatic backups, you can also manually backup your WordPress site with UpdraftPlus. To do this, in your WordPress dashboard, go to Settings and then UpdraftPlus Backups. Click the Backup Now button and on the pop-up, select files/database backup and whether you want to send the backup to remote storage. Still on the pop-up, click the Backup Now button to start the backup process.

It will continue to backup your WordPress files and database, depending on what was selected, and upload it to the remote location.

Restore a WordPress backup with UpdraftPlus

To backup your WordPress site is easy with UpdraftPlus. However, that is only a half of a solution. You also need to be able to restore your WordPress site when something goes wrong. Luckily, it is also as easy to restore your WordPress site with UpdraftPlus.

To start restoring your site, go to Settings, then UpdraftPlus Backups and click the Restore button. On the Backups page, it will start to scan your server for existing backups. If it is a fresh WordPress installation, it will not find anything. Do not panic, you will still be able to restore your WordPress site. If you saved the backups on your computer, click on the Upload backup files link to restore them.

You can also connect UpdraftPlus to a remote location again and enable it to scan that remote location and use those backups. To do this, go to the Settings tab and select the service you used earlier to store your backups.

Follow the same instructions to authenticate your website with the selected remote storage service, as when you created the backups. Go back to the Existing Backups tab and click on the Rescan remote location link. UpdraftPlus will scan the remote storage location and display all available backups on the Existing Backups page.

Click on the Restore button next to a backup. On the pop-up, select what you would like to restore and click the Restore button to start the restore process.
